Construction Estimator

Heath Steel is currently looking for a Construction Estimator to lead both negotiated and competitive bid projects. Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 3 years experience estimating at a general contractor doing both hard bid and negotiated work and a college degree in construction management or engineering.

Our preconstruction team competes for negotiated and competitive-bid projects in diverse markets including aviation, recreational, oil & gas, warehouse, educational, municipal, etc.

We are pursuing more hybrid steel projects, larger metal building projects, more negotiated work, and participate more and earlier on the design side of the project. Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage multiple hard bid and negotiated estimates
• Perform quantity takeoffs to identify necessary materials and amounts
• Prepare preconstruction estimates for schematic and design development levels for projects
• Review construction plans and specifications to complete quantitative take-offs
• Communicate with subcontractors and vendors about project scope, schedule, risks, etc.
• Fill out forms to request estimates from metal building manufacturer
• Complete bid day forms, proposal letters, envelopes for turn-in, bid bonds, etc.
• Assist Operations team in pricing Change Orders and procurement
• Build and track bid-tabs throughout Estimating process for subcontractor/vendor comparisons
• Manage trend logs, VE option pricing, and attend design meeting for preconstruction projects
• Document Estimating changes and addendums as they are released
• Record bid results and follow-up documentation after bid is submitted
• Clean up estimate after award for turnover to operations team

Qualifications:

• 3+ years experience working as an estimator for a general contractor
• Undergraduate degree in construction management/engineering or equivalent experience
• Have a teamwork mentality and be willing to assist peers and other departments when needed
• Respectful of others and open to new ideas
• Strong sense of accountability
• Strong computer skills Excel, Word, Bluebeam
• Experience using and managing Excel estimates and bid tabs
• Effective and service oriented communication with subcontractors, vendors, and customers
• High level of organization and attention to detail
• Adaptable and eager to learn
